An individual has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of convicted child killer Roy Whiting while both were incarcerated. Andrew Light, aged 45, was present at Leeds Magistrates Court, facing accusations of attempted murder and wounding with intent, with both charges relating to an incident involving Whiting at HMP Wakefield on 11 February. Whiting is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of eight-year-old Sarah Payne, who was from Hersham in Surrey. The murder occurred 24 years ago. Sarah disappeared in July 2000 while playing close to her grandparents’ residence near Worthing, in West Sussex, and her body was discovered 17 days subsequent to her disappearance. Mr. Light, whose appearance was conducted via video-link, also faces a charge of unlawful possession of a knife. During the concise hearing, the defendant was not required to submit any pleas, and his case has been postponed to the same court on 9 January 2025. Whiting received a life imprisonment sentence for Sarah’s murder in December 2001. Initially, he was mandated to serve a minimum term of 50 years, but this was subsequently reduced by 10 years by the High Court in 2010.
