Mike Williamson, who became Carlisle United’s head coach after departing MK Dons, has observed consistent progress in his team’s displays. His comments followed their 1-1 draw against Bromley on Saturday. The 41-year-old assumed his role at Brunton Park in September, having previously left MK Dons. His initial match leading the club resulted in a 2-0 win over Swindon Town. Despite that initial success, Carlisle subsequently endured a nine-game winless streak across all competitions, which concluded with a 1-0 triumph against Salford earlier in November. Speaking to BBC Radio Cumbria, Williamson stated, “As a complete performance, that’s up there with the best that we’ve had so far.” He further elaborated on his team’s development, adding, “Obviously, it’s about the lads having an understanding of why we’re moving the ball and when to speed it up.” Carlisle owner Tom Piatak appointed Williamson, with the American businessman explaining his decision in a statement on the club website, external. Piatak informed supporters that he selected the former Newcastle United defender due to their shared commitment to a possession-based footballing philosophy. Having secured a point at Hayes Lane, courtesy of a stoppage-time equalizer by Dan Adu-Adjei, Williamson expressed confidence that his team can ascend the League Two standings from their current 23rd place. In Saturday’s draw at Bromley, United maintained 70 percent possession and registered 23 shots. Williamson believes his tactical approach is well-suited to his new squad. Williamson further commented, “The amount of times we entered the final third and the amount of chances we created was fantastic.” He elaborated on the team’s progress, stating, “For us, it was about building up that emotion we felt as though we started with the Wigan game – we put a real resilient performance there and then every week we’ve built off that.“ He concluded by saying, “Another day, we score another couple of goals and take the three points but, for me, it was just about building on the actual performance and I thought you could see steady steps of improvement”.
