Building work has commenced on 43 new residences in a former Staffordshire mining village. This initiative, known as Silkworks, will feature one-bedroom apartments along with two- and three-bedroom affordable rental properties in Chesterton, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The project, which is being overseen by social landlord Aspire Housing, has received partial funding from Homes England and the government’s Town Deal. Completion is anticipated by early 2026, and planning permission has also been secured for a third phase of the development. The initial phase of the £20m scheme involved the construction of nine bungalows in 2022. Dan Gray, executive director of place at Aspire Housing, stated that he was “looking forward to seeing the Chesterton community continue to grow and thrive.” Keon Homes has been appointed to undertake the construction of the homes, with site clearance already in progress. Matt Beckley, the firm’s partnership director, commented that affordable housing was “badly needed” in the area. Aspire Housing owns and manages more than 9,000 homes across Staffordshire and Cheshire. The organization reinvests its profits into developing new homes and providing support services.
