A former care home, which has become a site for anti-social behavior, is slated for demolition at an estimated cost of £175,000. Hurlfield View Care Home, situated in Gleadless Common, Sheffield, ceased operations in March 2017. This closure occurred despite efforts by campaigners who advocated for its continuation as the last remaining dementia respite care facility. The closure proceeded even though 5,900 individuals signed an online petition opposing the move, following the termination of NHS funding and the building’s unsuccessful attempt to sell after being placed on the market. The council stated that the decision to demolish the structure is expected to reduce maintenance expenses and ensure the site’s safety and security. A report presented to the council’s finance and performance policy committee indicated: “Previous attempts have been made to re-purpose the site, however the condition of the building and its apparent attraction of anti-social behaviour has made this difficult, therefore a decision was taken to demolish the building.” The report further noted that the building represented an “ongoing liability” and offered no genuine prospects for future development. Councillors were informed that the site will be cleared to ground level, with foundations and drainage systems being removed. Additionally, fencing and gates will be installed to secure the perimeter, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The demolition project is anticipated to conclude by April 2025. Councillor Elle Dodd remarked that the decision regarding the demolition had been made a year prior. She further stated that funds allocated for maintenance could have been preserved had the demolition proceeded more promptly.
