Musician Billy Bragg has secured £2,566 for the restoration of the cottage where William Blake composed Jerusalem, achieved through the auction of one of his guitars. Mr. Bragg stated his intention to contribute the funds from the sale of his Epiphone semi-acoustic guitar to the Blake Cottage Trust. This organization is currently undertaking the restoration of the residence inhabited by the poet and artist between 1800 and 1803. Located in Felpham, West Sussex, the Grade II listed cottage requires £175,000 for the installation of a new thatched roof and essential structural repairs. The trustees have indicated an overall fundraising goal of £3m. Doug Nicholls, chairman of the Blake Cottage Trust, characterized Mr. Bragg’s contribution as “generous and touching.” The musician has maintained a long-standing connection with Blake, having recorded his own rendition of Jerusalem in 2006 and launched the album William Bloke in 1996. He previously referred to the cottage as “one of the most important buildings in English literary history.” Mr. Nicholls further commented: “Billy Bragg’s generous and touching contribution to our work is in the great Blakean tradition of imaginative gift giving.” He also stated: “Thank you to Billy and we hope the successful purchaser will enjoy the guitar.” English Heritage added the cottage to its at-risk register in 2021.
