Jon Jones, the two-division champion, completed his initial heavyweight title defense against Miocic. Jones is widely regarded as an enigmatic figure. Throughout the fight week for UFC 309 and across his remarkable career, Jones’s defining characteristic has been his unpredictability, both within and outside the octagon. At 37 years old, with 23 UFC fights and a record 16 victories in championship contests, Jones consistently discovers novel methods to confound and overcome his adversaries. Known as a perfectionist, Jones is recognized for meticulously reviewing hours of opponent footage prior to fights to identify vulnerabilities. For this particular bout, Jones’s chosen offensive maneuver was a powerful spinning back-kick, which led to the knockdown of his opponent, Stipe Miocic, before an audience of nearly 20,000 enthusiastic fans at New York’s Madison Square Garden. This technique, which he began developing earlier this year, drew inspiration from the renowned martial artist and actor Bruce Lee. Jones stated, “About six months ago we started training the spinning back-kick. My taekwondo coach would come over to my house, we trained that same kick three hours a week for several months.” He further elaborated, “Bruce Lee says he doesn’t fear the man that knows 10,000 kicks, but the man who has worked one kick 10,000 times. I worked it and it was a devastating shot.” Prior to Jones delivering the decisive strike, his American opponent, Miocic, demonstrated limited defense against the varied offensive maneuvers directed at him. This was attributed in part to Miocic’s age, as at 42 years old and having been absent from the octagon for nearly four years, he was not performing at his peak. However, a significant factor was Jones’s extensive range of techniques, which included jabs, high-kicks, elbows, knees from the clinch, and takedowns, all employed to systematically wear down Miocic. Jones’s unpredictability extended beyond the fight itself, as his behavior outside the octagon this week mirrored his in-ring actions. Earlier in the week, he used an expletive to characterize Britain’s interim champion, Tom Aspinall, whom Jones has largely disregarded as a potential next opponent. On the same day, he exited an interview with sports broadcaster TNT Sports, stating he anticipated an “Aspinall fest.” Subsequently, he confronted Miocic, initially declining to shake his hand at a news conference, only to reverse his decision and accept a handshake the following day at the weigh-ins. Jones is a polarizing figure, a characteristic that has persisted throughout his UFC career, which has been marked by instances of doping bans and challenges in his personal life. UFC president Dana White is acutely aware of this aspect of Jones’s career. Dana White commented, “Me and Jon Jones never got on out of the cage. We had a horrendous relationship for 10 years.” He continued, “We don’t have that kind of relationship anymore, but I didn’t have to like him to realise who he is and what he’s capable of and seeing the brilliance. He is the best to ever fight, period.” White concluded by stating, “It’s unbelievable what he did tonight. As long as he’s active he’s the pound for pound best in the world.” Donald Trump, along with top cabinet picks, was present at the UFC event. Few fighters appear as comfortable during the pre-fight preparations as Jones. On Thursday, Jones was observed smiling backstage upon receiving an electric guitar from a Madison Square Garden staff member, presented in recognition of his UFC accomplishments. On the day of the fight, Jones was seen sparring within the octagon of an empty Madison Square Garden, an activity considered unusual for UFC fighters. Mere hours before his scheduled walk-out to confront Miocic, Jones broadcast live on Instagram, singing with his team en route to the arena. Prior to his victory over Miocic, Jones had suggested the possibility of retirement, but he now states his intention to continue fighting if the UFC presents him with an offer he deems irresistible. Should such an offer not materialize, Jones expresses contentment with the potential conclusion of his historic UFC career. Jones remarked, “Professing my love for Jesus in front of everyone tonight, being an American champion, doing that in front of my president [former and the next US president Donald Trump]. If Stipe was my last fight, that was the way to do it.”
