The High Court in Dublin has been informed that Irish mixed martial artist Conor McGregor faces an accusation of raping a woman at a hotel in the city. Nikita Hand is seeking civil damages from Mr. McGregor and a second individual, asserting she was sexually assaulted. Counsel for Mr. McGregor informed the court that Ms. Hand, who does not possess an automatic right to anonymity, is engaged in an attempt at extortion. Justice Alexander Owens instructed the jury that Ms. Hand was allegedly sexually assaulted by Mr. McGregor and James Lawrence, whose address is Rafters Road, Drimnagh, on 9 December 2018. The judge stated that the pair are alleged to have “in effect raped her.” Mr. Justice Owens clarified to the jury that this proceeding is not a criminal matter but a civil case concerning assault, and that if the assault is proven to have taken place, it constitutes a civil wrong for which the plaintiff is entitled to compensation. John Gordon SC, representing Ms. Hand, stated that his client was acquainted with Mr. McGregor due to their shared age group, geographical origin, and mutual acquaintances. In 2018, Ms. Hand resided in the Dublin suburb of Drimnagh with her partner and her seven-year-old daughter. Mr. Gordon noted that Mr. McGregor held “enormously famous” status and was regarded as a “hero” within the Drimnagh community. Testimony presented in court indicated that Mr. McGregor picked up Ms. Hand, a hairdresser from Dublin, and her friend after a Christmas party on 8 December. Ms. Hand was under the impression that Mr. McGregor intended to take her and her friend to a different party. Subsequently, they were joined by Mr. Lawrence and proceeded to a penthouse suite at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, where they consumed alcohol and cocaine. During the evening, Mr. McGregor gestured for Ms. Hand to accompany him into a bedroom. Evidence presented to the court indicated that Mr. McGregor “came onto” Ms. Hand, but she did not want to have sexual intercourse because she was on her period. Ms. Hand subsequently alleges that Mr. McGregor pinned her down on the bed. Mr. Gordon informed the court that the jury would be presented with evidence detailing how she attempted to repel him but was unable to, resulting in bruising, scratches, and a cut on her chest. A gynaecologist who examined Ms. Hand at the Rotunda Hospital’s emergency department on 10 December also testified in court. Dr. Daniel Kane stated that she was “shaking and crying” during the entire examination. Dr. Kane further observed numerous injuries on Ms. Hand, with photographs of these injuries displayed to the court. He characterized the injuries as ranging from moderate to severe. It is subsequently alleged that she engaged in sexual activity with Mr. Lawrence, though Mr. Gordon asserted that she has no recollection of this event. Ms. Hand later returned home and saw her mother, who contacted 999. An ambulance transported her to the hospital. Mr. Gordon stated that Mr. McGregor intends to attribute the injuries to “rough sex.” He further added, “What he is saying is that she gave him a licence to carry out what has to have been a brutal assault on her body.” The defense contended that Ms. Hand had multiple chances to report her treatment to others but failed to do so. The court was also informed that the defense will assert Ms. Hand is involved in an extortion attempt. Mr. Gordon mentioned that his client is being labeled a “gold digger and a fraud.” Nevertheless, he stated that she had demonstrated courage by pursuing “vindication and compensation.” The legal proceedings are anticipated to continue for approximately two weeks.
