The Welsh Parliament, the Senedd, has endorsed a prohibition on the commercialization of single-use vaping devices within Wales, effective from June of the upcoming year. Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies stated that this action represents a “major step forward in tackling throwaway culture and the environmental impacts of single-use vapes”. He also mentioned that the Welsh government is collaborating closely with ministerial counterparts across all UK nations to implement the prohibition concurrently. Consequently, the distribution or free provision of single-use vapes will be prohibited following 1 June 2025. The Welsh government is encouraging businesses to engage with their suppliers regarding alternative product orders and to begin training their employees and notifying patrons. Furthermore, businesses will be responsible for arranging the eventual secure disposal of single-use vapes for their clientele. The Welsh government initially announced this prohibition in October, following the UK government’s declaration that it would cease the sale of disposable vapes in England starting June 2025. The Scottish government had initially intended to implement the ban in April but postponed its introduction by two months to align with England and Wales. Concerns have been raised that the allure of vaping has extended to individuals who do not smoke across the UK. Scientists estimated that, as of October this year, one million adults in England had commenced vaping despite never having been regular smokers. Additionally, worries existed that a prohibition might exacerbate an existing and expanding black market for illicit vapes, which often contain elevated nicotine levels. Earlier in the current year, Swansea council reported the confiscation of over 140,000 illicit vaping devices within a period of several months.
