An 18-year-old Portsmouth supporter, Elissa Cobb, described “quite a weird atmosphere” at Fratton Park following a power outage on Wednesday evening. She recounted, “The lights were all working fine – just a normal match day – then at half seven the lights just suddenly went out, out of the blue.” Approximately 45 minutes later, the initial surprise among fans shifted to frustration when the Portsmouth v Millwall match was postponed due to the incident. Andrew Cullen, chief executive of Portsmouth FC, expressed he was “incredibly sorry,” explaining that the disruption stemmed from a substation issue over which the club had “no control.” Mr. Cullen stated that the lights began to reactivate around 20:05 GMT; however, their intermittent nature led to the decision to postpone the game. Ms. Cobb, who attended the match with her brother, remarked, “I was really annoyed, very frustrated – I think we all were.” She also conveyed particular sympathy for the Millwall fans who had “travelled all that way.” Despite the disappointment, she added, “But you’ve just got to move on,” indicating she was “ready to go” for Portsmouth’s upcoming match on Saturday. Gary Bishop, 56, was present at the match with his 14-year-old son. Initially, when the lights failed, he believed it was part of a light show, until his son informed him that the taps in the toilet were not working. He stated that this was the moment he understood the situation was “something serious.” He observed, “At first everyone was laughing and making jokes… the longer it went on everyone was just like, ‘what can you do?'” He continued, “Just sitting there waiting and waiting, and the longer it went on you just thought, ‘it’s not happening’.” Despite the letdown, Mr. Bishop maintained a philosophical outlook. “There’s not a lot you can do,” he commented.
