A regional authority leader has stated that Nissan is anticipated to remain in Wearside “for a long time to come”. Henry Kippin, who serves as the chief executive of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) – an entity representing seven councils, including Sunderland – expressed confidence regarding the factory’s future, despite financial concerns surrounding the Japanese automotive company. Nissan previously announced plans to eliminate 9,000 positions worldwide, stating the necessity to establish a “leaner, more resilient business”. The impact on the Sunderland operation remains uncertain, but Mr. Kippin conveyed his “optimistic” outlook for its future. During a NECA meeting held on Tuesday, Northumberland Labour councillor Les Bowman questioned Mr. Kippin about his awareness of reports suggesting the plant “may disappear” and how the region would manage such a “bombshell”. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Mr. Kippin highlighted that the automotive giant had pledged to manufacture electric Qashqai, Leaf, and Juke models at its Sunderland facility. He further mentioned that Nissan had received nearly £10 million in investment from NECA for the construction of a “world-leading” training facility. In addition to the job reductions announced the previous month, Nissan stated its intention to decrease production by 20%. The company has contended that government regulations, which mandate that a minimum of 22% of new vehicles sold by manufacturers in the UK in 2024 must be zero-emission, are obsolete. Nissan asserted that this target “risks undermining the business case for manufacturing cars in the UK, and the viability of thousands of jobs”. Subsequent to pressure from the industry, the government has initiated a consultation regarding the Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEV) rules.
