“I didn’t expect to see her at graduation, of all places.” A mother experienced a significant surprise during a graduation ceremony with her twin daughters when they reconnected with the midwife who assisted in their birth 27 years prior. Jessica and Lucy Sheldon were born at Derby City Hospital in 1997, delivered with the help of Jayne Leverton, who was then a midwife and is now a lecturer at the University of Derby. This week, while the twins were accepting their nursing degrees at Derby Arena, their mother, Tracey Sheldon, identified a familiar individual. Tracey Sheldon remarked, “I suddenly recognised that one of the staff members sat on the stage was the midwife who helped me during my labour.” She added, “It’s been amazing for her to meet the girls now they are all grown up.” Following the ceremony, the twins had their first encounter with Ms Leverton since their birth. Jessica expressed that it was “unbelievable to know that Jayne was mum’s midwife” and characterized the unexpected reunion as “a full circle moment”. Ms Leverton, who established the university’s midwifery programme in 2021, commented that it was “wonderful” to have encountered the twins. She further stated, “They are the future generation of healthcare professionals, and I couldn’t be more delighted to have been introduced to them all these years later.” The twins’ father passed away unexpectedly in 2020, and their mother conveyed that she was “incredibly proud of them” upon their graduation. Prior to commencing their degree studies in 2021, Jessica and Lucy served as clinical apprentices and healthcare assistants at the Royal Derby Hospital. Jessica explained, “We lost our dad when we were 22 and, after working in the hospital during the pandemic, we decided we wanted to both pursue nursing together.” She added, “It made us realise that life is too short.” Jessica is currently employed as an A&E nurse at the Royal Derby Hospital, and her sister holds a position as a general medicine ward nurse at the same institution. Lucy stated, “I’m really proud of us both and we are so happy we have made it.” She continued, “Our degree was hard but we have supported each other – it was always nice to come home and be able to talk to one another about our studies.” Lucy concluded, “Knowing we had each other kept us both going.”
