According to the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal manager in Wiltshire, a region with numerous armed forces families, displaying a poppy “shows that you care.” Several major Army bases and the Salisbury Plain training area are situated within the county. Peter Saunders clarified that the £700,000 collected annually by the Royal British Legion within the county is directly allocated to support the armed forces community. “The poppy shows that you care. Shows them that you’ve taken the time out to remember what they’re doing,” he informed the BBC. Mr. Saunders commended the “incredible work” performed by the poppy appeal volunteers. He further stated, “We’re hoping for a bit more this year.” The Royal British Legion contributes financially to various projects, frequently addressing bereavement, mental health, and injury recovery. Additionally, it provides daily living assistance as veterans integrate into civilian life. For instance, one initiative involved the installation of several washer-dryers for former military personnel residing in apartments at Entrain Space, located in Wilton, Salisbury. These apartments are intended to assist veterans, along with their families, in adjusting to the difficulties associated with departing the Army. Appliances valued at £17,000 were contributed, as it was determined that relying on a communal laundry facility hindered independent living. Furthermore, the Royal British Legion has financed minor provisions for veterans at these apartments, including food vouchers. Carl Brown, who departed military service at the age of 36, has resided there for approximately two years and is preparing for his imminent departure. He commented: “I didn’t know what council tax was – I never had to pay it I’d always been behind that military wire. It’s been a great transition.” Kenny Brown, representing Entrain Space, stated: “Remembrance is about the men and women who came before us. “If we forget about what the RBL stands for and we don’t donate, the chances are that some will slip through the cracks and not have the future they deserve after military service.”
