South Devon College, located in Paignton, has been granted the Green Gown Award for Sustainability Institution of the Year. The college in Devon was recognized for its sustainability strategy and its commitment to action. The judging panel stated they “appreciated the evolution of their approach to all areas of sustainability” and noted that the college’s work “not only positively affected those directly connected to the college but their impact extended throughout their region as well as globally”. Laurence Frewin, who serves as the principal and CEO of the college, commented: “I could not be prouder to tell our students, friends, colleagues and stakeholders.” The Green Gown Awards, currently in their 20th year, are designed to acknowledge sustainability initiatives implemented by universities and colleges. Mr. Frewin described the award as “a celebration of all the significant work that the college has been doing for the last 15 years”. He further added: “This is not the end but another milestone on what is a long but vital journey.” Over the past 15 years, South Devon College’s efforts have included establishing the South West Energy Centre, introducing the Green Travel Plan, making investments in solar panels and air source heat pumps, and inaugurating the £17.5 million Hi Tech and Digital Centre.
