An unnamed donor has pledged to match donations received during a Christmas appeal launched by a charity supporting carers. Caring Together, a charity based in St Ives, provides assistance to individuals caring for a family member with a disability or a long-term illness across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, and Norfolk. The organization had set a fundraising goal of £5,000, and the anonymous benefactor has committed to matching each donation made before midnight on Christmas Eve, up to an aggregate amount of £5,000. Miriam Martin, the chief executive, stated: “This appeal allows us to continue providing the essential services [carers] need, while offering donors an opportunity to double the impact of their generosity.” She further added: “The donations will also help us provide treats, trips out and fun breaks from caring for children who are carers, some as young as four years old.” Throughout 2023 and 2024, the charity assisted 27,000 unpaid carers, along with the individuals they support, through various means. These services encompass a telephone advice line, emergency planning assistance, structured breaks, and chances for carers to connect with others facing similar situations. The charity reported that Cambridgeshire alone has at least 52,000 unpaid carers, noting that “many struggle with stretched finances, exhaustion, isolation, emotional stress and anxiety.” It also mentioned that its full service area contains over 150,000 carers. Ms Martin commented: “Unpaid carers in our community are heroes, often going above and beyond to care for family members and friends with little recognition or support. “We are so grateful to our generous supporter for making this Christmas Appeal even more impactful.” As of now, £3,600 has been collected.
