Live text commentary for the PFL Finals, featuring bouts such as Brendan Loughnane against Timur Khizriev and Dakota Ditcheva versus Talia Santos, will be available from 21:00 GMT on the BBC Sport website and app. Brendan Loughnane’s distinguished career has been marked by numerous eventful experiences. This Friday, the 34-year-old fighter will aim to secure his second PFL featherweight title against Russian Timur Khizriev in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This contest presents Loughnane with an opportunity to achieve a historic milestone, building on his victory in 2022. Reflecting on his 14-year, 35-fight career, Loughnane recalls remarkable moments that have brought him to the brink of becoming the first British two-time world champion. Loughnane states, “I’ve been knocked out, I’ve knocked people out, I’ve subbed people, I’ve gone the distance, I’ve tasted my own blood, tasted their blood, you name it I’ve done it.” He shared with BBC Sport some of his extraordinary fighting memories, ranging from an impromptu holiday fight in pink swimming shorts to enduring a bout with a broken arm. In 2010, Loughnane celebrated his initial professional victory by vacationing with friends in Malia, a well-known holiday destination on the Greek island of Crete. Only three days later, he found himself competing once more, recounting, “I was walking down the strip, and some people said, ‘do you want to come and watch some cage fighting tonight’?” He continued, “I went down there in a pair of pink beach shorts, but someone pulled out on the night, so I ended up saying, ‘stuff it, I’ll do it’, no gumshield, nothing. I ended up beating the Greek champion over there – and it was like I was the king of Malia, they were parading me through the streets.” Loughnane possesses exceptional cardiovascular fitness within the sport, evidenced by his current resting heart rate of 29 beats-per-minute in preparation for his fight against Khizriev, a trait that would have been beneficial during that night in Malia. He humorously admitted, “I was intoxicated too… let’s not beat around the bush.” He further explained, “It was three days in so I’d been intoxicated for three days. It was my first lads’ holiday.” A video segment is referenced with the title “‘That will steal your soul’ – Ditcheva’s top 5 finishes.” Seven years subsequent to this event, Loughnane, having just incurred the third loss of his career, was resolute in avoiding consecutive defeats, even with a broken arm. He recounted, “I ended up doing a spinning backfist, my opponent put his head down and my arm snapped.” He continued, “I showed my corner and they said they were gonna stop the fight but I said, ‘no, I’ll find a way’.” Loughnane described the continuation of the fight: “I came back out for the second round, my arm’s hanging down at my side, and I’m jabbing him with my other. Then the guy realises my arm’s broken so I head kicked him and knocked him out – insane.” Loughnane stated that he managed to find the determination to win, notwithstanding the intense pain. He recalled the aftermath: “I’ll never forget when I did it and tried to shake it off, my arm just went ice cold, and then the real real real pain kicked in. When my adrenaline had stopped I was screaming in the back.” Loughnane also recounted other memorable experiences, such as fighting amidst fans blowing cigarette smoke into the cage, competing just prior to a riot, and traveling to Australia for a bout with only 24 hours’ notice. He characterizes his career as a “rollercoaster,” anticipating another peak if he defeats the 29-year-old Khizriev. Due to the PFL’s tournament structure, Loughnane has already competed and won three times this year, leading to his confrontation with Khizriev. He further elaborated on the format, stating, “It’s not like you can win the belt and defend it – you’ve got to win four fights on the bounce to win another tournament.” Loughnane expressed his view that “I think it’s been underplayed about what I’m about to do here.” Among his peers, Loughnane’s accomplishments have garnered significant attention, with UFC legend Randy Couture characterizing him as “one of the greatest of his generation.” For the Mancunian fighter, this recognition holds paramount importance. Loughnane admitted, “It’s incredible, motivating and very humbling coming from people like Randy Couture.” He emphasized, “And listen, that sort of stuff there, getting respect from your peers, is worth way more to me than a belt or money.” Loughnane concluded, “These people, who I’ve admired my whole career, and they’re watching my martial arts and enjoy my version of what they do? it’s incredible.” Sandi Toksvig will be joined by Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi, and Alan Davies. Opportunities are available to sing along to music from Queen, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, and other artists. Ben Fogle and Kate Humble are returning for the festivities at Longleat Safari Park. Topics range from microplastics in air, soil, and waterways to the current extent of food waste. © 2024 BBC.
