Cornwall Council has put forward modifications aimed at enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists in specific areas of Penzance. The council’s proposals include the introduction of additional pedestrian crossings and a new bus shelter for Market Jew Street and Market Place. According to the council, this initiative is expected to enhance connectivity for walkers and cyclists and provide increased outdoor areas. The council announced that a public consultation regarding these proposals is currently underway. In 2021, the Penzance Town Deal Board, collaborating with Cornwall Council, secured £21.9m in Town Deal funding to back various projects within the town. Of this amount, the council indicated that £6.1m is allocated for the plans concerning Market Jew Street and Market Place. Regarding Market Jew Street, the council stated that the proposals involve strengthening the pedestrian zone by “creating a more effective gateway and improve accessibility for pedestrians, people with reduced mobility, cyclists and public transport”. On Market Place, courtesy crossings have been put forward, designed to connect with the northern and southern footways, alongside the addition of new plantings on that thoroughfare. The existing bus stop layby is planned to be paved with granite, thereby expanding the area available for pedestrians. Furthermore, a new bus shelter is slated for installation, and the bus stop itself will be relocated onto the road. The public consultation period on Cornwall Council’s website will remain open for a duration of three weeks.
