Residents of Jersey are being asked to provide food and water for hedgehogs, as warmer winter conditions have disrupted their typical hibernation cycles. The Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group advised individuals to place out bowls of water and dry cat food. Rescuers noted that this food type would stay fresh for several nights and contribute to the dental health of the mammals. Warmer winter temperatures result in hedgehogs remaining active for extended periods. To maintain food freshness and deter consumption by cats and birds, the group suggested that islanders construct a feeding box. According to the group, these feeding boxes can be created by cutting a 5in (13cm) circular opening and positioning the box inverted. The group also stated that pre-made boxes are available for purchase from the White Lodge center in exchange for a donation. The introduction of hedgehogs to Jersey occurred in the middle of the 19th Century, approximately concurrently with red squirrels, as reported by the group.
