During the most recent installment of the When You’re Smiling podcast, former Foxes winger Matt Piper shared his perspective on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s new role: “He handles himself well. He is an impressive guy, who has had an impressive career. He was one of the players who won everything at Manchester United and it was easy to look at the group and hate a lot of them, but him I’m not just saying this because he’s now our manager, I was really impressed with him on and off the pitch. He’s calm under pressure and it was a super impressive press conference. He sounds super proud to take this job and it’s his first job in the Premier League. I don’t want to get too excited too early, but I’m really excited to have him as our gaffer.” Piper noted that Van Nistelrooy’s desire for the position was evident in his responses, especially given Leicester’s current struggles and a prevailing sense of negativity around the club. He underscored Leicester’s status as a significant club, highlighting its excellent training facilities, supportive owners, outstanding staff, and rich history, including recent triumphs in the Premier League and FA Cup. Piper concluded that Van Nistelrooy “should be proud.” Rob Tanner drew parallels between Enzo Maresca and Van Nistelrooy, observing that this was not the first time Maresca had been mentioned. He pointed out that the two were former teammates and are managers who share similar philosophies. Tanner recounted that they conversed for approximately half an hour after Chelsea played United, discussing Leicester even before the club made an approach, and spoke again once Leicester initiated contact. Tanner suggested that there are clear similarities between them. He explained that players respected Enzo due to his achievements playing for Juventus, his collaboration with Pep Guardiola, and the trophies he had won, leading to “Instant respect.” Tanner believes Ruud will experience the same level of respect and anticipates that players will connect with him. Tanner expressed that this appointment ideally “should have happened in the summer.” He identified Manuel Pellegrini as a key shared influence on both Enzo and Ruud, having managed and mentored them both. Ruud, during a sabbatical year, spent time with Pellegrini at Real Betis. Tanner conveyed his excitement about the appointment and his hope for its success, emphasizing the high stakes for Leicester and warning that relegation “would be a disaster.” Post navigation Ireland Men’s Hockey Concludes 2024 Pro League with Loss to Argentina Deeney Highlights Ugarte and Casemiro’s Midfield Partnership as Key Manchester United Improvement
