Consumers preparing for Christmas have received a warning regarding potentially unsafe products, following the refusal of entry for 349,000 items at a UK port during the current year. Since January, Suffolk Trading Standards has intercepted thousands of goods at the Port of Felixstowe. Among the seized items were hundreds of unsafe air-fryers, fan heaters, and wall chargers, in addition to counterfeit products. Graham Crisp, who leads Suffolk Trading Standards, advised the public to “be on the lookout” for unsafe goods. Crisp stated, “The Port of Felixstowe is a huge gateway to the UK and our officers work extremely hard to intercept these dangerous items before they reach the marketplace.” He added, “However unsafe goods can still slip through and I urge the public to be on the lookout for them and to let us know as soon as they come across them.” Specific seizures at the port included 74,565 toys, 104,983 electrical goods, and 8,965 e-scooters. Furthermore, officers detained 500 counterfeit “Dyson” hair dryers, which testing revealed posed a risk of electrical shock and fire. The counterfeit product demonstrated overheating, failure to cut off, and began to smoke, leading to the melting of both external and internal components. Steve Wiles, cabinet member for public protection at Suffolk County Council, commented, “The numbers of items intercepted reflects the need for people to be vigilant about what exactly they are buying, particularly online.” Indicators that a product might be unsafe or dangerous encompass a faulty wire, misleading or poorly spelled labels, unclear instructions, or a lack of safety markings.
