On Friday, Nikita Hand, who had accused mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor of rape, was successful in her civil claim for damages against him. McGregor was directed to compensate her with nearly €250,000 (£208,000). BBC News NI was present in the crowded courtroom as the jury, following a day of deliberations, announced its verdicts. A palpable tension filled the compact courtroom at Dublin’s High Court when the jury re-entered. Conor McGregor and Nikita Hand occupied seats in relatively close proximity at the rear of the courtroom. Despite their physical closeness, a vast emotional distance separated them. A significant ruling was imminent for these two individuals, nearly six years after their encounter in a Dublin hotel on 9 December 2018. Nikita Hand alleged that the MMA star raped her on that date. McGregor asserted that their encounter involved “fully-consensual sex”. As proceedings recommenced on Friday morning, Nikita Hand was seated at one extremity of a wooden bench near the back of the courtroom, accompanied by her partner Gary. A line of chairs had been arranged behind the bench for additional attendees. McGregor occupied one of these chairs, positioned at the opposing end of the bench. His fiancée, Dee Devlin, attended the case with him for the first time, and they sat together. His parents also joined him, alongside a small contingent of supporters who stood directly behind him in the courtroom’s rear corner. During the judge’s address to the jury at the commencement of the morning’s proceedings, Conor McGregor maintained a fixed stare upon them. After the jury departed the courtroom to resume their deliberations, he rose and conversed with his supporters, periodically entering and exiting the courtroom, drinking from a water bottle, at times slowly exhaling, and occasionally humming for short periods. Later that day, the court received notification that the jury wished to continue deliberations until 18:00 local time. This introduced further suspense and anticipation. Subsequently, in the late afternoon, news circulated abruptly regarding a development – the jury was preparing to re-enter with their verdicts. McGregor re-entered accompanied by an increased number of supporters on this occasion, resulting in a crowded rear section of the courtroom. Ultimately, a court official found it necessary to request some individuals standing at the back to relocate to the upstairs public gallery. Upon the jury’s return to the courtroom, both Ms Hand and McGregor displayed visible emotion. Prior to addressing the jury, the judge expressed his desire for “calm” during the delivery of the verdicts and issued a caution that “anyone who makes a scene will find themselves in jail”. The jury, composed of eight women and four men, had deliberated for six hours and ten minutes, and now, on the 12th day of the trial, they were poised to answer two inquiries concerning two men. The question, “Did Conor McGregor assault Nikita Hand?”, was met with the response “yes”. Regarding the question, “Did James Lawrence assault Nikita Hand?”, the jury stated “no”. Silence persisted in the courtroom. Subsequently, particulars of the damages awarded against Conor McGregor were disclosed. Following some discussion, the judge ultimately confirmed that the aggregate damages totaled nearly €250,000. At that point, the legal proceedings concluded. Individuals began exiting the courtroom, and media representatives hastened outside to prepare to disseminate this information to an international audience. Shortly thereafter, McGregor exited the court, encircled by his family and supporters, with media personnel trailing his every movement along the facade of the High Court towards a waiting vehicle. Journalists repeatedly posed questions concerning the trial’s result and his prospects. McGregor remained silent, and he was promptly guided into the waiting car, which then departed amidst the sounds of clicking cameras and flashing lights. Subsequently, he declared via social media his intention to appeal the ruling. Soon after McGregor’s departure, Ms Hand approached the assembled media, accompanied by her legal team and her boyfriend. She wept continuously while delivering a statement, expressing gratitude to her partner, her daughter, her family, and all who had sent her messages of encouragement. Upon completing her statement and as she prepared to leave, I inquired about her experience of the preceding two weeks. She responded, “A nightmare.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
