Following the postponement of its match against champions Real Madrid last Saturday, Valencia has now requested that its upcoming La Liga fixture against Espanyol, scheduled for this Saturday, also be deferred. The club’s appeal is made as the city continues to manage the aftermath of the devastating floods that struck eastern Spain last week. Last week, both Valencia’s Copa del Rey encounter with Parla Escuela and its La Liga game against Real Madrid were postponed. These delays occurred after flooding in the Valencia region resulted in a minimum of 217 fatalities. In a joint statement issued with neighbouring club Levante, Valencia declared: “Just a week has passed since the catastrophe of the storm and the situation is still very serious.” Levante has also expressed a desire for its second division match against Tenerife to be cancelled. La Liga has formally requested the Spanish football federation (RFEF) to reschedule the affected matches. Several managers, including Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid, Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid, and Hansi Flick of Barcelona, voiced criticism regarding the RFEF’s ruling. This decision stipulated that, with the exception of Valencia’s game, all Spanish top-flight matches should proceed as planned last weekend.
