Somerset County Cricket Club (SCCC) conducted a memorial service on Tuesday to honor Mary Elworthy-Coggan, a devoted fan who had contributed significantly to local charities by raising thousands of pounds. Ms. Elworthy-Coggan died at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton on 15 November, at the age of 90. Her passion for cricket originated from her father and first husband, both of whom served as captains for the local Huish Champflower club. Andy Caddick, a former fast bowler for England and Somerset, commented: “For more than 30 years Mary was a big part of our family and, along with Mike, watched our children grow and they toured the world with us.” He further stated: “There was a strong bond between us and they were like surrogate parents to us when we were in the UK.” Ms. Elworthy-Coggan performed duties such as making teas and scoring for the club, roles she ceased in 2010. In 2016, she assumed the presidency of the West Somerset Cricket League. Each year, she arranged a sponsored walk along the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, a Royal Ascot Ladies Raceday, a Christmas Lunch and carol service, and a barbecue at her residence, which received support from numerous Somerset players and club officials. From 1988 to 2002, she served on the SCCC general committee, during which time she secured significant funds for players’ testimonial or benefit years and for the club itself. Her dedication and efforts were acknowledged in 2005 when she was granted honorary life membership, becoming the first woman to receive this distinction. In July, Ms. Elworthy-Coggan hosted the 30th and last barbecue at her home. This event generated over £6,000, with the funds being distributed among the Alzheimer’s Society, Darby Rimmer Motor Neurone Disease Foundation, and SCCC.
