Women from various nationalities participating in a photography project have shared that exhibiting their work brings them pride and has aided in forming new friendships. The “Women of the World” initiative was organized by the Hive community centre in Ipswich and directed by professional photographer Gillian Allard. Ms. Allard collaborated with seven women, hailing from Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Tanzania, guiding them to creatively articulate their views on their new home town located in Suffolk. Ms Allard said: “It was for them to explore identity in a way that’s fun and playful, so they could forget about what’s going on on the outside and just enjoy their time together.” Topics investigated by the group encompassed resilience and strength; empowerment and change; cultural and identity; motherhood and family; and hope and joy. Jackie Ellis, a community worker at the Hive, commented: “Through this exhibition we aim to honour the resilience, beauty and strength of women from all walks of life, showcasing their stories through the universal language of photography.” Suffolk County Council provided funding for the initiative. The photographs are currently being exhibited at the Hive, situated on Norwich Road in Ipswich. Updates on Suffolk news can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC.
