The Melbourne Renegades have climbed to the top of the Women’s Big Bash (WBBL) table, moving closer to an automatic final berth, following a dominant nine-wicket victory over the Sydney Thunder. The team that secures the first position in the 10-team table at the conclusion of the group stage is guaranteed a spot in the final on 1 December. While the Thunder had held the leading position for most of the tournament, this recent defeat allowed the Renegades to surpass them during the final round of matches. Hayley Matthews contributed an unbeaten 60 runs from 37 deliveries, supported by Sophie Molineux’s 42 runs from 29 deliveries, enabling the Renegades to successfully pursue a target of 134 runs with 34 balls remaining. Earlier in the match, Molineux had claimed 4 wickets for 23 runs, contributing to the Thunder being dismissed for a total of 133 runs, with Phoebe Litchfield being their highest scorer at 30 runs. The Brisbane Heat still have an opportunity to move ahead of the Renegades if they defeat the Sydney Sixers on Sunday (09:05 GMT), with net run-rate serving as the tie-breaker for the top position. The Thunder have secured a spot in the knockout stage; however, their participation in either the Knockout match, contested by the third and fourth-placed teams, or the Challenger match, hinges on the outcome of the Heat’s game.
