An initiative designed to enhance safety in Eastfield, Northampton, an area identified for its elevated rates of burglary and vehicle crime, is being launched by Northamptonshire Police and a local residents’ association. Northamptonshire Police selected Eastfield for this program due to its higher-than-average statistics for both burglary and vehicle-related offenses. As part of this project, over 200 crime prevention packs are being distributed to residents. These packs enable individuals to mark their possessions with a forensic liquid, assisting police in the identification of stolen goods. Danielle Stone, Northamptonshire’s Labour police, fire and crime commissioner, expressed her hope that this initiative would contribute to residents feeling “more safe in and around their local community.” In September, a “study tour” was conducted, gathering residents, businesses, and various organisations to pinpoint strategies for enhancing public safety. Additional elements of the scheme involve the installation of more than 20 street signs throughout the area, coupled with the dissemination of Crimestoppers leaflets designed to discourage criminal acts. Additional interventions targeting vehicle crime and personal safety are scheduled for the New Year. These upcoming actions encompass the distribution of 500 vehicle crime prevention packs to specific households and the launch of an online Crimestoppers campaign. This campaign will utilize social media advertising to motivate young individuals to report instances of violence. Sammie Wakefield, representing the Eastfield Residents’ Association, commented that the study tour had been “really positive” and noted that some residents had already observed the implementation of these actions. She added, “We have had more [people] contact us in private to explain the issues around Eastfield now that they have more confidence that we are being listened to.” Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.Copyright 2024 BBC.
