Researchers at Coventry University are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to support educators situated over 6,000 miles away. Experts indicate that teachers in rural communities across northern Vietnam encounter difficulties due to limited access to technology and training. A team, spearheaded by Dr Petros Lameras, has now launched GameAid, a project designed to demonstrate how teachers can effectively utilize generative AI. Dr Lameras stated his belief that the project, which employs a game to instruct teachers on AI usage, was essential. He remarked, “We are not just enhancing skills but fundamentally changing how educators engage with technology in the classroom.” Generative AI, also known as Gen AI, possesses the capability to produce text, images, speech, music, video, and code in response to user prompts. In Vietnam, urban areas generally benefit from superior access to technology and educational resources compared to rural regions. Coventry researchers propose that AI can be employed to assist in providing educational materials, improving student learning outcomes, and bridging the disparity among educators from under-represented groups. Dr Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, affiliated with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, has also been involved in this initiative. He commented: “The GameAid project equips teachers with simple guidelines and tools to integrate generative AI into lesson development, fostering innovation in education. “It focuses on reducing the educational gap between urban and rural areas in Vietnam, promoting equal access to new learning opportunities.”
