Police have reported that an innocent woman was dismissed from her employment after a complete stranger falsely identified her as the operator of her speeding vehicle. Sobia Iqbal, a resident of Bradford, received a suspended prison sentence at York Crown Court after confessing to perverting the course of justice, an act committed to evade accumulating penalty points on her driving record. Initially, she had asserted that a different individual was driving her car at 43mph in a 30mph zone within Harrogate, which resulted in an innocent woman facing prosecution for the infraction and subsequently losing both her driving licence and her employment. On Friday, Iqbal, residing at Poplars Park Road, was given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the victim. In May 2022, a police mobile camera van recorded Iqbal’s vehicle exceeding the speed limit on the A661 Wetherby Road. The individual Iqbal identified as the driver subsequently admitted the offence via mail, accepting a fine and points on her licence. This led to her disqualification from driving under the totting-up rules, and consequently, she lost her job. Nevertheless, the inquiry was reinitiated following suspicions that an incorrect name had been provided. Upon examination, the video footage confirmed that Iqbal was indeed the driver. PC Michael Ray from North Yorkshire Police stated: “This is a case which involved Iqbal nominating a complete stranger as the driver of her own vehicle. Our thorough investigation demonstrates that we will take positive action against those who attempt to dishonestly avoid prosecution for traffic offences. I would like to use this example to remind anyone who is thinking about engaging in such behaviour that they are most likely to face far more serious consequences as a result. It also has a profound effect on the innocent victim who is caught up in the case.” Audiences can access highlights from North Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North, or submit potential news stories for coverage.
