Alan Douglas Clune, 45, has received a prison sentence following his attempt to rape a vulnerable 18-year-old man in a hotel room. The attack, described as a “horrific sexually-motivated attack,” occurred while Clune was HIV positive and resulted in “deep and lasting trauma” for the victim. Clune, who has no fixed address, was facing a rape trial at Bristol Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to attempted rape on the second day of proceedings. He received a 12-year extended sentence, comprising nine years of imprisonment and an additional three years to be served on licence. Detective Sergeant Laura Wrighton of Avon and Somerset Police stated, “Because Clune is HIV positive and did not use protection, the victim in this case had to also endure a long and anxious wait before being given the all-clear.” According to police, the victim’s testimony during the trial is believed to have led to Clune altering his plea. Det Sgt Wrighton further commented, “The victim has been extremely courageous in reporting the offence and supporting the prosecution’s case.” She added, “We’re forever grateful for his bravery which has seen a very dangerous offender given an extended sentence which will help protect the public from his destructive criminal behaviour.” Clune encountered the 18-year-old man in Bristol city centre during the early hours of Wednesday, January 25, 2023. The man subsequently accompanied Clune to a hotel room, where the assault took place. Det Sgt Wrighton concluded by saying, “It’s important to use this successful prosecution to urge victims of sexual offences to come forward.” She assured potential victims, “You will be listened to and believed and we can help ensure you get any specialist advice and support you need.” Readers can follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
