A mother, Anne-Marie, residing in north Northamptonshire, has called for increased assistance for children experiencing bereavement. This appeal follows the suicide of her ex-partner earlier this year. Anne-Marie noted that while support was readily accessible for adults like herself, there was a recognized gap in provisions for children within the county. In response, she has established The Seddon Legacy Project. This initiative offers support for grief management and facilitates memory-making activities, stemming from the difficulties her two children encountered in processing their father’s suicide. Anne-Marie stated, “The reason I want to create [the project] is to have that initial communication [with children], so they know they’re not excluded or on their own.” Annually, around 60 individuals in Northamptonshire die by suicide. Anne-Marie recounted that her ex-partner’s mental health declined after their separation, despite his engagement with his GP and mental health services, and an apparent period of improvement. She noted that his passing profoundly affected their children, particularly as one child found his body alongside Anne-Marie. She commented, “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support offered,” adding, “But it’s one thing understanding grief as an adult, it’s another to a child who is vulnerable.” Furthermore, Anne-Marie mentioned that her eldest child is contending with a range of complex emotions. She observed, “He’s asking questions that, as a parent, you simply don’t know how to answer.” Currently, The Seddon Legacy Project remains in its initial phase, with Anne-Marie actively collecting data concerning child bereavement to guide its future development. She underscored the necessity of openly discussing suicide with children, stating, “The less we talk about suicide, the more of an issue its going to be. This needs to be a priority.” For updates on Northamptonshire news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
