Head coach Wayne Rooney has identified Adam Randell as a “future captain” at Plymouth Argyle, noting the midfielder’s consistent presence as a first-choice player for Argyle over recent seasons. The 24-year-old midfielder netted the Pilgrims’ equalizing goal during their 1-1 draw against Derby County, Rooney’s former club. An Argyle academy product, Randell had been sidelined for the previous two games due to a thigh injury but returned to lead the team as skipper, filling in for the injured captain Joe Edwards. Following Randell’s strong 90-minute performance at Pride Park, Rooney stated, “He’s Plymouth Argyle’s future captain.” He further elaborated, “I think he’s got the right temperament, he’s a local lad which is always important as well.” Rooney added, “Everything he’s got as a player, the mindset and mentality is what I like.” This goal marked Randell’s first of the current season and his 10th overall in his Argyle career, which began with his league debut in September 2019 at the age of 18. He has since accumulated 144 appearances for the Pilgrims and also completed a developmental loan spell at Torquay United, contributing to their advancement to the 2021 National League promotion final. After Saturday’s draw, Rooney commented, “He’s an important player for us.” He continued, “I spoke to the physios, of course with any player coming back from injury there’s an element of risk, but we felt it was such an important game for us that if we could get him on the pitch we’d do that.” Rooney concluded, “Thankfully he’s come through, he’s fine, he’s got 90 minutes and got a goal, so [I’m] pleased for him.”
