Birmingham City Council is evaluating a funding application as part of newly revealed plans aimed at completely reopening the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG). The museum, located in the city centre, initially closed in 2020 for construction work. While it has undergone phased reopenings this year, most of its areas remain inaccessible to the public. A report from Birmingham City Council indicated that the ongoing work revealed a necessity for additional refurbishment, noting that certain sections were in poor condition. This report, which cabinet members are scheduled to review next week, suggests submitting a “stage one” application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for £9m. This sum would contribute to a reopening initiative estimated to cost approximately £10m overall. The document projected that BMAG could achieve full operational status by 2030/31, provided the funding application is approved. This would result in 42 galleries equipped with collections, an accessible multi-faith room, a quiet space for neurodiverse visitors, and crucial renovations. As per the report, the decision on this application is expected by April 2026, after which a “stage two” bid would be required. The report detailed that electrical rewiring conducted at the museum uncovered additional problems, including deteriorated walls, ceilings, and floors. It further stated, “The collections storage and facilities used by staff and volunteers are in an even poorer state of repair.” Additionally, the report highlighted that BMAG’s temporary closure imposed financial strain on the council, due to its “detrimental impact” on the Birmingham Museums Trust’s (BMT) capacity to generate revenue essential for the museum service’s sustainability. The document noted, “BMT have submitted compensation claims for this loss for the past three financial years,” and indicated that another claim would be filed for the current financial year. Council cabinet members are scheduled to review these proposals on 12 November. Among the museum areas that have reopened this year is The Round Room gallery, which has showcased art for nearly 150 years. A partial reopening of the museum also occurred in 2022 for the Commonwealth Games.
