An adult swan avoided significant harm following an unforeseen entry into a cosmetics warehouse, having fallen through a glass skylight. The bird landed amidst shattered glass after its descent through the roof of Lush Cosmetics, located in Poole, Dorset. Upon observing the swan suspended in netting approximately 25ft (8m) above the warehouse floor, staff contacted the Ringwood-based charity Wildlife Rescue for assistance. The mute swan subsequently dropped to the floor when it attempted to fly from a narrow girder, prior to volunteers from the charity being able to reach its position. According to the charity, Lush staff “rallied around and cleared the area below just in time as the swan suddenly descended and crashed onto the floor below”. The swan was transported to the charity’s hospital, where a full X-ray revealed no bone fractures, only a laceration beneath one wing and several bruises. Mike Meeks of Wildlife Rescue stated: “He weighs about 10kg so he would have hit the 50ft high roof with some velocity.” He added: “He’s made an amazing recovery… the small cut under one wing needed about seven stitches… but now he is in one of our pools swimming around.” The charity indicated that the swan’s release could occur within the next few days, provided its recovery progresses.
