Sheffield Households and Businesses First to Receive New Smart Water Meters

Households and businesses in Sheffield are set to be the initial recipients of new smart water meters, forming part of a broader initiative to deploy 1.3 million such devices throughout Yorkshire over a five-year period. Yorkshire Water stated that these new meters are designed to enable users to monitor their water consumption and assist in identifying leaks. The company indicated that its contractor, Morrisons Water Services, has commenced contacting customers in Sheffield who currently possess meters, as these individuals are prioritized for the exchange program scheduled to start in January. James Wilson, representing Yorkshire Water, commented that adopting smart metering would allow the company to guarantee its water supply remains “robust, efficient and sustainable”. Mr. Wilson further explained that smart water meters would enable the company to “better understand water demand and target water efficiency”. He added, “For customers, smart meters will help with early leakage detection, provide accurate billing and bring a better understanding of their water usage across the region.” Yorkshire Water stated that in the majority of instances, the installation of the new smart meters would occur in the identical position as the current equipment. They also mentioned that all water utility companies are aiming to decrease leakages by 50% by 2050, and over 90% of the current water meter infrastructure is anticipated to reach the end of its service life by 2030.
