Swansea City’s head coach, Luke Williams, has expressed his intention to secure up to three new players during the upcoming January transfer window, stating that the club is once more adopting a global approach to its recruitment efforts. This follows last summer’s signings, which included players from clubs in France, South Korea, and Portugal. Williams conveyed confidence in Swansea’s current standing as the mid-season transfer period approaches, noting his participation in an extensive recruitment discussion held earlier in the week. The Swansea head coach holds the belief that a push for a play-off spot is achievable this season, and the club intends to enhance its chances of finishing in the top six by reinforcing its squad. Williams stated, “I think between one and three signings would be realistic for what we are going to do.” He further commented, “I don’t think now is the time to rip everything up and bring in a new team.” Williams added, “We have players in mind. We are talking to clubs and agents of players. We are quite advanced with the preparation.” Swansea is anticipated to once again seek at least one dynamic wide player during January, having failed to secure targets for that specific role in August. Additionally, a centre-forward capable of scoring goals would be a beneficial acquisition, despite the known difficulty of securing such players during January transfer periods. Due to restricted financial resources, Swansea’s recruitment strategy last summer predominantly focused on international markets, leading to the signing of players such as Eom Ji-Sung, Goncalo Franco, and Zan Vipotnik. In the previous January window, the club acquired Brazilian winger Ronald after identifying him at Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora, and comparable transfers might occur in the upcoming month. Williams explained, “We are still in that space because we have to explore every avenue so we don’t compete on the same territory all the time as our competitors [in the Championship].” He continued, “We are all the time trying to find niche players who suit what we want, and be brave enough to go with that even if others aren’t chasing down the same player.” Williams concluded on this point by stating, “I wouldn’t be surprised if a player comes from anywhere in Europe or Africa or Asia.” While Falkirk right-back Keelan Adams has been mentioned as a possible January target, Williams clarified that he is unaware if Swansea is currently tracking the 23-year-old player. Williams chose not to disclose the specific positions he intends to reinforce but affirmed, “We are ready to strike as soon as the window opens.” He cautioned, “I don’t want to give the impression that something’s all signed and we are just waiting for the window to open, because we still have to wait for the other parties to be in the place where they are ready to commit.” Williams, whose team is scheduled to face Hull City in the Championship on Saturday at 12:30 GMT, indicated that some peripheral players might depart next month. He also recognized the possibility that others “may be lured away by other clubs,” although no interest has materialized to date.
