Attendees of the Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations on Tuesday are advised to make preparations in advance and prioritize safety. The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has requested that individuals not residing in Lewes avoid the event, stating that “the crowds and narrow streets can present unique safety challenges.” Commencing at 20:00 GMT, six bonfire societies will conduct processions through the town’s streets, which will be succeeded by separate bonfire events and firework displays. Visit Lewes recommends that individuals “enjoy the processions from the comfort of their own homes,” noting the availability of an online livestream. Anticipated road closures will affect areas in and around Lewes starting at 16:45 on Tuesday. Parking restrictions will be implemented from midday, leading to the suspension of on-street parking on specific streets within the town. Lewes District Council has indicated that these constitute the primary roads subject to impact, with additional closures probable within the town itself. Roads within Lewes are scheduled to reopen once Sussex Police determine it is safe to do so, a time which Lewes District Council estimates will be approximately 02:00 on Wednesday. Bus services will operate on Tuesday; however, a significant number of routes will be diverted. Brighton and Hove Buses announced plans to deploy additional staff at numerous stations to assist passengers, though it cautioned that all travelers should anticipate delays. Information regarding the affected bus routes is available on the company’s website. From 17:00, trains will bypass Lewes and the adjacent stations of Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde, and Southease. Additional details are accessible on the Southern Railway and National Rail websites. BBC Sussex is available for following on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
