Ipswich Town fan writer Steve Mellen shared his perspectives in an interview, responding to inquiries from Manchester United contributor Dale O’Donnell. Regarding the significance of Kieran McKenna to Ipswich Town, Mellen affirmed his role as “the key to the success of the past two seasons,” highlighting that securing his new deal was “the most important event in our summer.” He also noted the club’s apprehension “every time a Premier League club sacks their manager,” adding, “He is brilliant.” Addressing Ipswich’s upcoming match against Manchester United, Mellen acknowledged that the “Tractor Boys'” last league victory over United occurred in 1994. Despite “confidence high after the past two performances,” he expressed being “slightly wary of calling a win,” anticipating that United players would be eager “to impress their new boss,” Ruben Amorim, in his inaugural game. Mellen suggested that Ipswich could “get a point” at Portman Road, but predicted United would be “up for it and to present a huge challenge.” On the subject of Ipswich avoiding relegation, Mellen stated he was “Hopeful rather than confident.” He observed that the team appears “to be finding our feet, as the win at Spurs shows,” but conceded that “the odds are against us as a team that was in League One in recent memory.” He concluded with a firm commitment: “We will fight to the end and will not be daunted by any challenge, and McKenna’s ability to improve players and maintain team spirit will be key.” Steve Mellen previously served as the editor of ITFC magazine Meet Me At Sir Alf and was also a representative for the fanzine Those Were The Days.
