Heart of Midlothian’s aspirations to compete in European football beyond Christmas, a milestone not achieved since 1989, were diminished following their loss to Cercle Brugge in the Conference League. The Belgian team took the lead just before half-time, courtesy of Malamine Efekele’s goal, a scuffed shot that wrong-footed goalkeeper Craig Gordon. In the 82nd minute, Lawrence Shankland missed a significant chance to equalize from the penalty spot, with the striker, who is currently out of form, sending his shot over the crossbar. This marks his fourth missed penalty out of his last seven attempts. Eight minutes later, Gary Magnee’s deflected shot confirmed Hearts’ fourth consecutive defeat in what has been a challenging season. With only one victory in their last seven games, the club now occupies the second-to-last position in the Scottish Premiership.
