A Cold War-era bomber is confirmed to stay on exhibition in South Yorkshire, following the announcement that its base, the former Doncaster Sheffield airport, could recommence operations in 2026. The Avro Vulcan XH558 Spirit of Great Britain, constructed around 1960, represented the final iconic bomber in active military duty and, subsequent to 1986, was the last of its kind to remain airborne. This aircraft has been permanently stationed at Doncaster Sheffield Airport for the last 13 years; however, the organization committed to its preservation received an eviction notice following the airport’s announced closure in 2022. Nevertheless, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) stated it has secured the backing of Doncaster City Council to maintain its presence at the location “long term”. Marc Walters, VTST’s chief executive, commented: “This is fantastic news for the charity and its supporters as we feel that XH558 is in the right location, owing to her history and links with the airport, the former RAF Finningley.” Vulcan bombers served as part of Britain’s nuclear deterrent during a segment of the Cold War. Their retirement from RAF service occurred in 1993. The final flight of Vulcan XH558 took place in 2015. Mr. Walters indicated that retaining the jet at its present site, where it has been situated since 2011, “meant a great deal to us all”. Doncaster Council announced in November that a new operator for the former airport had been selected, proposing that initial passenger flights might commence within 18 months. The council also mentioned that reactivating the airport would generate approximately 5,000 employment opportunities and convert the area into an aviation hub. Christian Foster, programme director for South Yorkshire Airport City, stated: “We are looking forward to working with the VTST to put a lease in place that gives them some long-term security.” The presence of Vulcan XH558 at Doncaster Sheffield Airport has drawn thousands of visitors. The VTST announced intentions to establish a Vulcan Experience at the location at a later date. Mr. Foster remarked: “It is important her welcome in Doncaster is extended and supporters are once again given the opportunity to see this feat of engineering up close.” Post navigation Guernsey Water to Commence £11m Ring Main Project Public Opposition to Alcohol License for New Restaurant on Otley Run Route
