A football club has denounced what it termed an “abhorrent act” by a supporter who seemingly derided the recent passing of player George Baldock during a derby match. A fan of Sheffield Wednesday was observed displaying a message on his phone, stating: “Where’s Baldock?”, during his club’s fixture against Sheffield United on Sunday. The 31-year-old athlete had previously played for Sheffield United before moving to the Greek team Panathinaikos in May. He was discovered deceased in a swimming pool at his residence in Glyfada, located in southern Athens, last month. Sheffield Wednesday issued a statement on X, indicating that the club was “aware of an image circulating on social media” and was collaborating with South Yorkshire Police on an inquiry. The club further stated that it “roundly condemns this abhorrent act”. The statement continued: “We are working together with South Yorkshire Police on an immediate investigation and make it absolutely clear that there is no place in football or society for such appalling behaviour.” The photograph was reportedly captured during Sheffield United’s 1-0 victory over Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship at Bramall Lane stadium on Sunday lunchtime. This match marked the first encounter between the two clubs since Baldock’s passing. Baldock, who was born in Buckingham, began his professional career with Milton Keynes Dons in 2009. He played internationally for Greece, qualifying through a grandparent. Following his departure from Sheffield United, he joined Panathinaikos. Preliminary coroner’s findings indicated drowning as the cause of death, with criminal activity being excluded. A statement released by his family at the time expressed that they were “in shock at this terrible loss”. Panathinaikos also issued a statement, saying: “We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George.”The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.” Sheffield United further stated that he “left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.”The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.” South Yorkshire Police confirmed: “We are working with Sheffield Wednesday FC to investigate an image circulated online during the Sheffield derby football fixture on Sunday 10 November.” Post navigation Defender Ezri Konsa Returns Early to Aston Villa from England Duty Hearts Manager Critchley’s Post-Match Reaction to 2-0 Defeat Against Cercle Brugge
