A court has been informed that an organised crime group involved in a scheme to import £90m worth of cocaine into the UK received assistance from a port security guard, who served as an “inside man”. This group of individuals, which included the security guard, was apprehended when 100 police officers conducted a raid at the Port of Sheerness in Kent during December 2021. Law enforcement personnel confiscated over a tonne of cocaine discovered concealed within a consignment of bananas originating from Costa Rica. Six of these men have pleaded guilty to conspiring to import Class A drugs and are currently awaiting their sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court. Paul Douglas, representing the prosecution, stated that the gang received aid from security guard Sam Elphick, 30, of Sheerness, who functioned as an “inside man” to facilitate their entry into the port. Nevertheless, the court was informed that the criminal group, headed by Danny Laird, 41, from Hertfordshire, and Joel McCaughey, 34, from Manchester, had been under observation by the police. The prosecution asserted that McCaughey traveled to Costa Rica to organize the loading of the drug consignment onto a vessel and was poised to earn approximately £400,000 from this operation. Following his return to the UK, preparations were made for the collection of the drugs once they had reached their destination. According to the prosecution, these preparations included the acquisition of a forklift and the instruction of gang members on how to rapidly unload the cargo. Mr Douglas informed the court that in the early hours of 19 December 2021, Elphick granted the gang access to the port, and they commenced unloading the shipment. The other individuals charged with conspiring to import Class A drugs are Darren Laurie, 53, who is of no fixed abode, along with Kyle Davidson, 32, Ian Woodward, 35, and Michael Turner, 57, all of whom reside in Hertfordshire. Elphick has confessed to his involvement in the operations of an organised crime group.
