Residents from John Prescott’s former constituency have described him as a “strong character who did good for the city”. The former Labour Member of Parliament, who passed away at 86 years old, served Hull East for four decades, having initially been elected in 1970. This area is recognized as the city’s industrial core, featuring numerous factories, including the cleaning products manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser, alongside several docks situated along the Humber. Lord Prescott resided in Sutton and was a well-known figure within the community. Sharon’s Plaice, a fish and chip establishment located on the Ings Road Estate, was noted as one of his preferred takeaway spots. Sharon Foy, the owner, shared warm memories of his visits to collect a fish supper. “He was always joking,” she stated. “Always laughing and joking and soon as he walks in, ‘You’ve got me some chips while I’m waiting’?” “He’d stand here and eat some chips while he was waiting, but not tell his wife.” Ms. Foy recounted sometimes taking his order out to his Jaguar vehicle as he waited. Ms. Foy, who has operated the shop for three and a half decades, characterized his passing as “upsetting.” “I think he did a lot for east Hull,” she commented. “A lot of people people do think a lot about him. ” “There’s a lot of different opinion, but no, I think he will be remembered.” A customer waiting for his lunch characterized him as a “genuine sort of bloke who spoke how it was”. Nev stated that Prescott had “done quite well for Hull over the years”. “I think people thought well of him generally, irrespective of whatever party you support, ” he remarked. “You know he was straightforward bloke, he was OK.” Kevin Charles mentioned encountering the MP during his shopping trips. “He was a local politician for years he was,” he observed. “He was part of the community.” Mr. Charles added that Prescott would also be recalled for his partiality to Jaguar automobiles. “Two jags,” he chuckled. “Two jags John Prescott, that’s it.” Carol, encountered while shopping in the cold weather, expressed sadness upon learning of his death. “He was quite a figure for the area, he did stick to his guns and what he believed,” she commented. “So I think he was a good MP for the area.” “I think he’ll be remembered as a strong character who did good for the city and be remembered fondly.” Along Holderness Road, the primary commercial thoroughfare of the district, individuals were observed strolling through East Park under the autumn sun, notwithstanding the cold temperatures. A man recounted a meeting he had with the MP during the 1990s. Bob stated that he and Prescott were at a garage having their car tyres changed during Margaret Thatcher’s time as prime minister. “He must have known I’d recognised him and he just nodded,” he recalled. “I just said ‘When are we going to get this lot out John’?” And he simply replied, “soon as possible.” Bob acknowledged that many perceived the MP as a polarizing figure. “I think it’s a shame that you mention his name and people went, ‘yeah, what did he ever do for me’?” “I mean east Hull, the majority working class and he did try and do what he could for the people of his constituency.” Post navigation Welsh Budget Boosts NHS by £600m to Address Waiting Lists UK Intensifies Monitoring of British Jihadists in Syria
