Brian McClair has stated he “can’t fathom” Manchester United’s decision to transfer Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli during the recent summer transfer window. The 27-year-old midfielder has already registered two goals in eight games for the Italian team and has scored 11 goals in 56 international appearances for Scotland. His departure from his long-time club, United, occurred in August, following a record of 29 goals in 255 matches. Earlier in the current week, United terminated their association with manager Erik ten Hag and are now seeking their fifth permanent manager within a decade. On the BBC’s Sacked in the Morning podcast, McClair, a former prominent figure at Old Trafford, commented, “For me, it’s a big disappointment that he’s not still at Manchester United.” He further added, “I can’t fathom why on his performances when he played and when has played he’s been very good for Napoli. For Scotland he’s been a revelation.” McClair, a former Scotland international, previously coached McTominay during his youth career at Old Trafford. He noted that the adaptable midfielder “was written off so many times in his young life as a footballer player.” McClair elaborated on McTominay’s development, stating, “He grew really weirdly. His legs grew but he had a body that was tiny. You needed to wait for him because you knew he had the other attributes.” He continued, “You knew that if he got the physicality, he would be an athlete. He’s got a good character. He’s a decent idea about how to play the game. He’s got a good temperament. After that, it’s down to him.” McClair also highlighted his adaptability, saying, “He’s the one if you say, ‘listen, I need you to play right-back or left-back today’, they just go and do it.” Concluding his remarks, McClair affirmed, “He has the resilience and certainly the mentality to deal with negativity.” Post navigation Cadden Addresses Perception of Hibs Players’ Concern IRFU Reveals Clovers and Wolfhounds Squads for Celtic Challenge
