Artisans in an East Yorkshire town have constructed a ‘Christmas tree’ using woolly hats they have created. This vibrant display is now exhibited at The Petuaria Community Centre in Brough. Ali Davis, a member of the 25-strong Brough Yarn Bombers group, stated: “People who are cold or in need can take a hat free of charge.” She added that others are encouraged to contribute to the homeless charity Emmaus UK in exchange for a hat. Ms Davis also mentioned that the group is actively producing postbox toppers, with admirers invited to donate to Martin House, an organization that supports young people with life-limiting conditions. The knitting group convenes once a month at the Ferry Inn pub. Ms Davis recounted that she began crocheting during lockdown and made her first postbox topper for the Queen’s Jubilee. She remarked: “I just kind of got the bug really, and then sort of kept challenging myself to more and more intricate ones.” According to her, these creations can take anywhere between 10 and 50 hours to complete. The toppers are changed monthly, and the group accepts requests to support various charities. Over the years, they have knitted toppers for organizations including the Girl Guides, The Wildlife Alliance, and the British Heart Foundation. Ms Davis stated that crafting provides members with a focus. She further commented: “It takes the burden away just for a couple of hours a month.”
