Hourly parking fees have been lowered at several council-operated car parks in Brighton and Hove. This initiative aims to assist residents and stimulate the local economy. The reduction in prices is now active at facilities located in The Lanes, Regency Square, London Road, Trafalgar Street, and Norton Road. Brighton & Hove City Council noted that the utilization of its car parks has steadily declined since 2021, and that average hourly charges were higher compared to most other cities. Trevor Muten, the cabinet member responsible for transport, parking, and public realm, stated: “We’re making it cheaper for people to pop into the city to shop or socialise, which is important for supporting our day and night-time economy.” He further commented: “As well as improving parking services, the income this brings helps to support the bus services, enabling citizens to travel by public transport more easily.” Specifically, at The Lanes car park on Black Lion Street, the one-hour weekday rate has been decreased from £5.50 to £4. A similar reduction has been applied to the general one-hour rate at the Trafalgar Street car park. At the London Road car park, the one-hour tariff has decreased from £3 to £2, while at the Norton Road location, it has fallen from £1.70 to £1.50. The hourly weekday charge at Regency Square car park has also seen a reduction from £5 to £4, and its 24-hour weekday tariff has been adjusted from £32 to £25. The council also indicated that additional changes to evening and night-time tariffs are scheduled for implementation in the coming months.
