A proposal for a golf course within the Lake District is expected to receive approval. The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) has received a recommendation to endorse the establishment of an 18-hole golf facility at the site of Troutbeck Bridge Swimming Pool in Windermere. An earlier, comparable application was rejected in July 2023, as planning officials determined that the proposed development would result in the “deterioration of irreplaceable habitats.” The revised location for the proposed site avoids proximity to ancient woodland situated north of the club. Planning officers have also stated that potential effects on local residents, traffic flow, and parking provisions are considered “acceptable.” According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the golf course would incorporate new pathways, along with elements such as bridges, ponds, signage, and lighting. The project also includes re-landscaping the current car park and refurbishing the facade of the Choices Health Club building, with nine of the holes designed to be wheelchair accessible. The application’s assessment determined that there was “no potential” for any anticipated impact on the ancient woodland. Nevertheless, objections have been lodged by The Lakes School and Westmorland and Furness Council, citing concerns regarding the potential effect on the “safe operation” of the school, which is located across from the health club. Both entities expressed apprehension that establishing an “attraction in an inappropriate location would introduce levels of activity which would lead to unacceptable impacts on the safe operation of the school, and the safeguarding and amenity of pupils.” A report prepared by planning officers indicated that the golf course would not create an “unacceptable level of overlooking” and suggested that less busy times would probably occur during mid-week periods in term time. Committee members of the LDNPA are scheduled to deliberate on the application on 6 November.
