During an appearance on BBC Match of the Day, former Premier League defender Micah Richards identified set-pieces as a pivotal factor in Liverpool’s win against Aston Villa. Richards stated: “Austin MacPhee [Aston Villa’s set-piece coach] has got them so well drilled, but Liverpool turned Villa’s strength into their weakness.” Richards elaborated that Aston Villa’s strategy of pushing players forward created significant open areas on the pitch. This left them vulnerable, as they struggled to contain the speed of [Mohamed] Salah and [Darwin] Nunez. He explained the defensive dilemma during Liverpool’s counter-attacks: “From a defensive perspective [when Liverpool counter-attack], someone has to get tight or drop off. They were sort of in between. Aston Villa just couldn’t get it right and Liverpool capitalised on that.” Richards concluded that while Villa aimed to pressure their opponents by committing numerous players forward, Liverpool effectively exploited these tactical choices in disadvantageous positions.
