Errigal Ciaran will advance to face Dr Crokes in the All-Ireland semi-finals following Peter Og McCartan’s dramatic late winner. Errigal Ciaran defeated Kilcoo 1-8 to 0-10, securing their first Ulster Senior Club Football title since 2002. The match at the Athletic Grounds was a tight and tense affair, with the scores level seven times. Kilcoo was reduced to 14 men midway through the second half when Darryl Branagan received a straight red card. Joe Oguz’s early goal provided Errigal Ciaran with an ideal start, and despite Branagan’s dismissal, the Magpies held their ground until McCartan’s decisive long-range score deep into injury time. After Tommy Canavan missed an opportunity to win the game for Errigal, defender McCartan gained possession and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot to clinch the victory for the Tyrone club, sparking ecstatic celebrations in Armagh. Errigal is now scheduled to meet Dr Crokes in the All-Ireland semi-final in the first week of January, as the Kerry side had won the Munster title earlier on Sunday. Down champions Kilcoo, who were winners in 2019 and 2021, had been considered the favourites after their dominant semi-final performance against Scotstown, where they scored five goals. Karl Lacey’s team, who won the All-Ireland title under Mickey Moran in 2022, opened the scoring after two minutes. A period of patient possession concluded with Eugene Branagan dispatching the ball between the posts from long range. However, Errigal’s momentum received a significant boost just three minutes later when they scored the game’s only goal. Ruairi Canavan delivered a pass to his brother Darragh, and despite appearing to be fouled, the Errigal captain showed composure to flick the ball across the goalmouth, where Oguz was perfectly positioned to punch it into the net. From that point, the game remained closely contested. Kilcoo responded with a long-range free from goalkeeper Niall Kane before Miceal Rooney scored to level the teams. Although Tommy Canavan replied with a free, Kilcoo, referred to as the men in black and white, then registered the next three scores during an impressive spell. Errigal believed they had scored a second goal when Tiarnan Colhoun found the net, but referee Noel Mooney intervened to disallow it due to a square ball infringement. While Paul Devlin and Darryl Branagan gave Kilcoo a two-point lead, Errigal secured the final two scores of the half through Tommy and Darragh Canavan, leveling the score at 1-3 to 0-6 at the break. Darragh Canavan was later seen lifting the Seamus McFerran Cup. The second half also saw a back-and-forth exchange of scores, with Kilcoo responding through Devlin and a Eugene Branagan score after Ciaran Quinn had edged Errigal ahead. The game’s pivotal moment occurred halfway through the second half when Darryl Branagan was shown a straight red card for a perceived elbow on Odhran Robinson. Despite this, the teams continued to trade scores, initially from Harte and Devlin. A well-executed effort from McCartan with the outside of his right boot was then nullified by Anthony Morgan’s point. Subsequently, after Tommy Canavan converted his third free to level the teams for the seventh time, McCartan delivered the decisive blow with 30 seconds remaining. There was just enough time for Kilcoo to launch one final attack, but their failure to conjure a shot led to Errigal commencing celebrations for their significant victory. Having now conquered Ulster, Enda McGinley’s side will embark on their bid to become the first Tyrone club to win an All-Ireland title, starting with their January semi-final match against two-time champions Dr Crokes.
