An animal charity has reported the rescue of a blind duck after it was “bullied” by other ducks. The bird, which was located in Whitburn Pond in South Tyneside, was brought to the attention of Sunderland animal charity Pawz for Thought by local residents who had observed it “stumbling about” and being attacked by other ducks. Lorraine Thornton, representing the charity, stated that a decision was made on Sunday to admit the duck, known locally as Geraldine. Following an examination, the team quickly determined that Geraldine was either “blind” or possessed “very poor eyesight”. Ms Thornton explained that a duck lacking the ability to see well would be unable to survive in the wild. Fortuitously, approximately 20 minutes after Geraldine’s arrival at the rescue, two volunteers who had a “soft spot for disabled birds” came forward. Ms Thornton commented, “She’s going to get really good care,” and added, “They’ve done this many times before.” Ms Thornton described the timing as “as if by magic.” She wished to emphasize, however, that individuals should not attempt to domesticate wild animals themselves. “Wildlife should be in the wild,” she stated, but noted that in Geraldine’s specific case, “this is best outcome for her under veterinary instructions.” She further stated, “It is illegal to keep wild animals,” and emphasized, “It has to be vet checked.”
