Norfolk Police has announced an initiative to combat shoplifting in King’s Lynn and west Norfolk as the Christmas period approaches. This operation, named Operation Wonderland, involves collaboration between law enforcement officers and local businesses. The borough council in the area operates a control room that monitors over 11,000 CCTV feeds, enabling the real-time observation of potential thefts. Inspector Ben Jarvis of Norfolk Police stated, “Without this CCTV… we wouldn’t be able to do half of the things we do.” David Morton, who serves as the business operations manager for the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, indicated that his team regularly receives requests from police for assistance in identifying suspects. He elaborated, “They have seen people running down the street with bags and boxes, overfilled bags and things stuffed inside their jackets.” Data published by the Office for National Statistics in July revealed a 26.3% year-on-year increase in shoplifting reports within Norfolk. The police force noted that this represented the most significant rise in any recorded crime in the county, mirroring a broader national trend. Inspector Ben Jarvis emphasized that the CCTV system is “incredibly vital.” He further stated, “With the aid of the CCTV operators picking those people up at the earliest opportunity, [it] not only gives us a chance to locate the offenders, but also gives us a chance to gather as much property back for the shops.” He also commented, “I think the increased reports in shoplifting is actually a sign that people are happy we are going to deal with this when they report it.” Post navigation Ringleader of Speeding Fine Evasion Scheme Jailed Accidental Death Ruled for Man Who Fell into Bradford Manhole
