A Coventry-based theatre has provided hundreds of complimentary pantomime tickets, enabling disadvantaged families to attend a Christmas performance without cost. The Albany Theatre recently recommenced operations following the conclusion of a £3 million redevelopment project, which included the construction of a new studio theatre, cafe, and bar. Approximately 800 complimentary tickets for its “Alice in Wonderland” production have been distributed via food banks to individuals requiring additional assistance. David Meredith, chair of the Albany Theatre Trust, stated, “Giving people the chance to come and see a show like this – it’s what we’re all about.” Nicole, a long-term user of a food bank in the Foleshill area, received an invitation to the performance alongside her daughter, Keana. Nicole, who also volunteers at the food bank, observes the difficulties individuals encounter due to ongoing cost-of-living challenges. She commented, “We see a range of people from new mums, to pensioners who would rather feed their pets then feed themselves.” She further explained that the food bank consistently improves people’s lives, assisting various demographics from new mothers to pensioners, and is now facilitating families’ access to a pantomime. Nicole remarked, “At the moment with the prices, they can’t and being able to do that, with the help of Albany theatre, a lot of families have been able to experience it, and it’s good.” Mr. Meredith stated that the trust’s objective is to foster wellbeing through artistic engagement. He elaborated, “We know the arts are good for you however you engage in them, whether you get involved yourself doing it, or whether you come to watch it.” The Albany, which operates with a small staff team and community volunteers, is itself dependent on considerable support. Tickets for “Alice in Wonderland” are available for purchase for viewings until December 29. For updates, follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
